Just like the children we serve, Children's is growing and hiring a Director, Laboratory who Directs, oversees, and serves as the leader/advocate for Laboratory and Pathology Services in order to accomplish enterprise and departmental strategic goals and objectives. Has 24 hour/7 days per week accountability for assigned area.

Essential Functions/Competencies

20%

Defines operational standards, organizes department-level activities to achieve optimum service delivery/systems/care/processes, setting high performance and safety objectives for the department.  Holds self and others accountable to meet stated objectives, outcomes, goals, timetables and commitments, adhering to standards even in the face of unforeseen circumstances.

Develops and secures approval of capital assets, revenue, expense and labor hours budget for the department; directs activities within approved budgetary allowances to avoid unjustified variances in partnership with Business Manager and/or other management staff.  Addresses monthly variances to the budget.

Develops reviews, recommends and implements new and revised services and testing to meet the needs of the medical staff.

Gathers information and investigates patient variance reports and employee injury reports.

Oversees the operation of the technical sections to assure compliance with all federal, state and accrediting agency requirements (i.e. CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission) by coordinating the reviewing the work of section supervisors and leads in preparing for inspections, surveys and proficiency testing.

Directs staff in developing their skills and to maintaining consistency in applying policies and procedures of Pathology and Children’s  utilizing mentoring and coaching techniques

Maintains regular communication within Pathology and other departments, specialties, and nursing.

Maintains adequate staff within the technical sections to ensure prompt, efficient and cost-effective provision of services by developing personnel budgets, cross training and efficiencies of operation.

Personnel Management

Selects/hires employees and oversees training on job related tasks.Conducts employee performance management duties including completion and delivery of performance evaluations, setting goals, dissemination of information, coaching, addressing performance issues/routine correction actions, and recommending termination of employment.Makes salary recommendations.Submits notifications for personnel actions (e.g., status changes, terminations).Determines human resource needs.

Operational/Financial Management

Participates in the development and implementation of strategic objectives for the division.Develops and implements business plans for the department(s) that support the goals and strategies of the organization.Defines and approves processes and procedures within the department(s).Develops and recommends policies related to the operational or functional area.Develops the annual budget for the operational or functional area including human resource needs.  Prepares budget variance reports and develops corrective strategies to meet the area’s operational or financial plan.Applies business and management expertise to set direction, measure results, resolve problems, and achieve operational and financial objectives.Ensures compliance with quality assurance, safety practices, policies, regulatory, and legal requirements.

Develops and implements department policies and procedures to provide consistent patient care and employee management utilizing various references and regulations.

Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or related science, which includes a one-year internship in an approved clinical laboratory required.Preference for Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in related science or business degree.Minimum two years clinical laboratory experience to fulfill CLIA regulations required.Minimum 3 years’ experience management in a Laboratory environment required.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

Current and valid Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) or equivalent certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathology or other equivalent certifying agency required.
